Serious Java 1.7.x Vulnerability

A serious vulnerability has been found in Java 1.7, which allows execution of arbitrary code on the victim's computer. All that is necessary for exploitation to occur is to inadvertently visit a malicious website using a browser with Java 1.7.x enabled.

Oracle has released a new update to address this security issue, Java 1.7 Update 11. While we urge you to apply this update immediately, we also recommend leaving Java disabled unless you are intentionally using a site where it is required. Instructions for disabling Java can be found here or here.

Note that IMSS Managed Computing workstations are not running Java 1.7 and are not affected by this vulnerability, however we continue to recommend leaving Java disabled unless it is required.

LabArchives Site License

Caltech has established a site license for LabArchives under which all students and faculty will now have unlimited use of this platform. LabArchives is an electronic lab notebook that allows you to organize all of your laboratory data (text, spreadsheets, PDFs, Prism projects, and more). Data can then easily be located by keyword, user, or date. In addition, sharing data with specific individuals or groups is also possible. LabArchives Caltech Edition is virtually identical to the Professional Edition, with two exceptions: 1) The ability to publicly share data has been removed, you can still share data with specific individuals or groups but cannot assign a public URL; and 2) The ability to email to your Inbox has been disabled. These two exceptions are necessary to comply with Caltech legal and security policies.

How do I sign up?

Visit LabArchives and use your @caltech.edu email address to register.

Coming this spring: LabArchives will soon be accessible using your access.caltech credentials.

PERSONAL & INTERPERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS for Staff

Effective Organizations are a collection of effective teams which, in turn, are represented by effective individuals. Organizations that help develop the personal & interpersonal effectiveness of their employees are the same organizations that benefit from extraordinary business results, successful projects, excellent teams, and character-based leaders.  This seminar consists of a series of highly participative, engaging & purposeful exercises to help you see how your words, attitudes, and behavior affect not only your own level of workplace performance, but can have positive or negative influence on those you work with.  Participants consistently report back that this seminar helps them in a very practical way, see how the choices and decisions they make throughout every working day can help better serve themselves, their co-workers, their teams & their customers.   To Register:  http://hr.caltech.edu/Education/courses/personal_effectiveness.htm (or contact staffedcuation@caltech.edu or Ext. 3204)

TIME MANAGEMENT for Staff

Crucial relationships at work become strained when time is not respected, projects run over, email and voicemail is not managed, meetings have no agenda or don't run on schedule and an 'open door' policy becomes a living nightmare for many who haven't learned how to say "not right now".  This seminar is based on years of study of real people in real jobs and how effective people manage their time, respect others and have learned how to use email and voicemail for what they are – tools.  Participants will practice proven techniques – how to contribute to and run effective meetings; how to get their point over concisely and how to manage interruptions without offending colleagues.  The seminar presents a new way of looking at time and how effective people use their personal energy flow to know when to focus on their most challenging projects and tasks; how to avoid procrastination personally and how to inspire others they need to deal with, not to procrastinate either!  To Register:  http://hr.caltech.edu/Education/courses/timemanagement.htm (or contact staffedcuation@caltech.edu or Ext. 3204)

Adopt an Angel Program - Foothill Unity Center

Caltech Human Resources is once again sponsoring the annual "Adopt an Angel Program", which provides holiday gifts for children of poverty-level families from the San Gabriel Valley area. Adopting an Angel is an opportunity to buy new toys or clothes for a child who would not normally get a gift this holiday season.

To adopt an "Angel", please visit the Human Resources office at 399 S. Holliston between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. There are many decorated paper angels bearing the name of a child, his/her age and information about the child.  You will then be asked to bring in an unwrapped gift for your Angel, with his or her name attached, to the Human Resources office.  All gifts must be received by Friday, November 30. This is earlier than the deadline in the past years, so please visit the HR office soon to get your "Angel"!

The Angel Program is affiliated with the Foothill Unity Center, a nonprofit organization that provides critical support in the form of food, clothing, motel vouchers, referrals, and advocacy for people in crisis who reside in Pasadena, South Pasadena, Altadena, Monrovia, Arcadia, Sierra Madre, Bradbury, Duarte, Baldwin Park, Irwindale and Azusa.

Thank you for your support of this program over the years - it is a great way to give back to our community.

For more information, contact Christine Boyle at christine.boyle@caltech.edu or 395-1745.
